Thinking Machines Lab is a research and engineering organization founded in 2025 by Mira Murati and a team of scientists and engineers with backgrounds in widely-used AI products and foundational open-source projects. The organisation focuses on developing multimodal AI systems and advancing public understanding of frontier artificial intelligence through open science.
The lab identifies a gap between the rapid advancement of AI capabilities and the scientific community's understanding of how these systems work. Its approach centres on two interconnected areas: publishing research and releasing code to increase transparency around frontier AI systems and their training methodologies, and building AI systems designed for human–AI collaboration rather than full autonomy. This philosophy aims to make advanced AI more customizable and aligned with users' specific needs and values.
Thinking Machines Lab works across machine learning infrastructure, multimodal AI systems, model training methodologies, and human–AI interaction design. The organisation emphasises open-source tooling and frameworks alongside proprietary research, positioning itself as a bridge between cutting-edge AI development and broader scientific and public discourse.
