Deltares is an independent, non-profit knowledge institute for applied research in water and subsurface systems. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Delft, Netherlands, the organisation employs over 900 professionals from more than 60 nationalities. It operates without shareholders and is statutorily part of the vital infrastructure of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The institute's technical work spans flood early warning systems, coastal and estuarine modelling, climate adaptation, water management, and infrastructure challenges. It develops and maintains modelling software such as Delft-FEWS, a flood early warning system, and Delft3D, used for coastal and estuarine simulations. Deltares shares its tools openly under a 'dare to share' principle.
Deltares works in co-creation with universities, research institutes, businesses, NGOs, and governments across Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Asia, and Africa. Its research addresses industry verticals including flood safety, energy transition, climate neutrality, and infrastructure.
